How to Pack a Kitchen Like a Professional

The kitchen is universally considered the most difficult room to pack. Between fragile dishes, bulky appliances, and that drawer full of random utensils, it can feel overwhelming. But after thousands of moves across Pittsburgh, our team has perfected the process.

Start with a Clean Sweep

Before you pack anything:

  • Use up perishables. Plan meals around what is in your fridge and pantry in the weeks before your move.
  • Dispose of hazardous items. Movers cannot transport flammable or pressurized items. Check Allegheny County's hazardous waste disposal schedule.
  • Clean as you go. Wipe down appliances before packing them—you will thank yourself later.
  • The Professional Packing Order

Step 1: Rarely used items first Pack specialty appliances (bread makers, fondue sets, holiday dishes) first—these should go in boxes weeks before your move.

    Step 2: Glasses and stemware

  • Wrap each glass individually in packing paper.
  • Stuff the inside of glasses with crumpled paper for extra protection.
  • Place glasses upright in a cell box (divided box) — never flat.
  • Label the box "FRAGILE — GLASSES" on all sides.
  • Step 3: Plates and bowls

  • Wrap each plate individually.
  • Stack plates vertically (like records) in the box — they are strongest on their edges.
  • Place a layer of crumpled paper between every 3-4 plates.
  • Never stack more than 10 plates per box.
  • Step 4: Pots, pans, and bakeware

  • Nest pots and pans together with paper between each piece.
  • Wrap lids separately.
  • These can go in medium boxes — they get heavy fast.
  • Step 5: Small appliances

  • Wrap each appliance in packing paper or bubble wrap.
  • If you have the original box, use it.
  • Secure cords with rubber bands so they do not snag.
  • Step 6: Utensils and junk drawer

  • Bundle utensils in groups with rubber bands.
  • Use small boxes or zip-lock bags for loose items.
  • Pro Tips from Our Pittsburgh Movers

    1. Use dish pack boxes (also called "dish barrels") for fragile items—they are thicker than standard boxes. 2. Never use newspaper for wrapping—the ink transfers to your dishes. 3. Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes. 4. Label everything with the contents and destination room. 5. Pack a "first meal" box with paper plates, cups, utensils, and snacks for your first night.
